Massagno – Reconstructed Corner

Installed along a major road leading to the center of Lugano, this permanent site-specific sculpture by Paolo Grassi reinterprets the missing corner of a contemporary building. A sequence of large silver numbers projects into the void, expanding across multiple layers of depth and volume.

 

More than a decorative gesture, the work becomes a symbolic reconstruction of space, where absence is turned into presence and the number becomes structure. The composition unfolds like a suspended flow, interacting with light, shadow, and the rhythm of the urban environment.

 

 

Part of the long-term conceptual project From ‘0’ to Infinity, this installation explores the intersection of mathematics, movement, and architecture — revealing how numbers can shape not only meaning, but the spaces we inhabit.

Installata lungo una delle principali strade che conducono al centro di Lugano, questa scultura permanente site-specific di Paolo Grassi reinterpreta l’angolo mancante di un edificio contemporaneo. Una sequenza di grandi numeri argentati si proietta nel vuoto, espandendosi su più livelli di profondità e volume.

 

Più che un gesto decorativo, l’opera diventa una ricostruzione simbolica dello spazio, dove l’assenza si trasforma in presenza e il numero diventa struttura. La composizione si sviluppa come un flusso sospeso, in dialogo con la luce, le ombre e il ritmo dell’ambiente urbano.

 

Parte del progetto concettuale a lungo termine From ‘0’ to Infinity, questa installazione esplora l’intersezione tra matematica, movimento e architettura — rivelando come i numeri possano plasmare non solo il significato, ma anche gli spazi che abitiamo.

 


Thiago – Circular Public Sculpture

An urban sculpture that turns a traffic island into a silent space of rhythm and reflection.

Thiago is a 360° sculpture created by Paolo Grassi as part of the conceptual project From "0" to Infinity. Composed of vertical numeric elements arranged in circular formation, the work transforms a simple traffic island into a contemplative space open to the urban flow. Each number, sequential and unique, becomes a symbol of continuity, transformation, and silent presence. By positioning the piece on a high-visibility road, the artist reclaims a non-place and turns it into a monument to time and perception.

 

Thiago invites viewers to slow down — even momentarily — and reflect on the rhythm of their surroundings. The sculpture is neither a barrier nor a sign, but a magnetic center where memory, repetition and flow converge. Rusted steel gives the surface a vibrant patina, enhancing the sense of time etched into the matter. The installation is visible day and night, and at each hour reveals a new facet of its poetic geometry.

Thiago è una scultura a 360° realizzata da Paolo Grassi nell’ambito del progetto concettuale From "0" to Infinity. Composta da elementi numerici verticali disposti in forma circolare, l’opera trasforma una semplice rotatoria stradale in uno spazio di contemplazione, aperto al fluire della città. Ogni numero, sequenziale e irripetibile, diventa simbolo di continuità, trasformazione e presenza silenziosa. Collocata lungo un’arteria di forte passaggio, l’opera riattiva un “non-luogo”, convertendolo in monumento al tempo e alla percezione.

 

Thiago invita lo spettatore a rallentare — anche solo per un attimo — e a riflettere sul ritmo che lo circonda. La scultura non è un ostacolo, né un segnale, ma un punto magnetico in cui memoria, ripetizione e flusso si incontrano. L’acciaio ossidato dona alla superficie una patina vibrante, che amplifica il senso del tempo inciso nella materia. Visibile di giorno e di notte, l’opera rivela ad ogni ora una diversa sfumatura della sua geometria poetica.

Installed along a high-traffic road in Cadenazzo, Switzerland, Les Deux Roses is a permanent site-specific installation by conceptual artist Paolo Grassi. Two large red sculptures rise from the lawn in front of an administrative building, composed entirely of numbers arranged in fluid, organic formations. Their title – The Two Roses – alludes to both nature and geometry, softness and structure. The numbers curve and twist in space, creating a dialogue between visual rhythm, architectural precision, and symbolic growth.

 

Part of the long-term project From ‘0’ to Infinity, the installation explores the poetic and urban potential of numbers: sculptural elements that activate space, evoke presence, and transform the passage of time into a physical trace.

Installata lungo una strada ad alto traffico a Cadenazzo, in Svizzera, Les Deux Roses è un’installazione site-specific permanente dell’artista concettuale Paolo Grassi. Due grandi sculture rosse emergono dal prato davanti a un edificio amministrativo, composte interamente da numeri disposti in formazioni fluide e organiche. Il titolo – Le Due Rose – richiama natura e geometria, morbidezza e struttura.

 

I numeri si piegano e si avvolgono nello spazio, creando un dialogo tra ritmo visivo, precisione architettonica e crescita simbolica. Parte del progetto a lungo termine From ‘0’ to Infinity, l’opera esplora il potenziale poetico e urbano dei numeri: elementi scultorei che attivano lo spazio, evocano presenza e trasformano il tempo in traccia fisica.


Bad Ragartz – Site-Specific Installation by Paolo Grassi in Switzerland

A numerical facade becomes a manifesto. Public sculpture, identity, and the poetry of sequence.

Commissioned for the 5th International Sculpture Triennale in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, this large-scale public intervention by Paolo Grassi transformed the facade of a central building into a sculptural sequence of numbers. The work extended beyond the wall, with five additional installations placed along the Tamina river, all part of the conceptual project From ‘0’ to Infinity.

 

The central facade displayed numbers from 4819 to 4831 in silver, acting as a numeric banner and symbolic entry point to the exhibition. By assigning identity through numbers, Grassi created a visual code that marked the architecture, the event, and the passing of time.

 

The installation became the unofficial manifesto of the Triennale, turning an ordinary surface into a conceptual landmark — where art, mathematics, and public space converged.


Fortis – Numeric Sculpture in Public Space

Unveiled in the center of Bellinzona, Fortis is a public sculpture by Paolo Grassi created in 2011 as part of the conceptual project From “0” to Infinity. A vertical column of sequential, unrepeatable numbers rises along one of the city’s main roads, becoming a visual and symbolic landmark. The rusted metal absorbs the passage of time, reinforcing the tension between permanence and change.

 

The numeric progression becomes structure, surface, and sign. Fortis anchors itself in the urban fabric and collective memory, blending discipline and openness. The sculpture invites pause and reflection, revealing in numerical abstraction a poetic grammar of space. With its silent strength, Fortis celebrates the meeting of public art and thought.

Inaugurata nel centro di Bellinzona, Fortis è una scultura pubblica realizzata da Paolo Grassi nel 2011 come parte del progetto concettuale From “0” to Infinity. La colonna numerica si erge lungo una delle arterie principali della città, diventando punto di riferimento visivo e simbolico. I numeri, sequenziali e non ripetibili, diventano struttura, superficie e segno.

Il metallo ossidato accoglie il passaggio del tempo, rafforzando la tensione tra permanenza e trasformazione.

 

Fortis si radica nel paesaggio urbano e nella memoria collettiva, sintetizzando rigore e apertura. L’opera invita a rallentare, leggere e riconoscere nell’astrazione numerica una grammatica poetica dello spazio. Con la sua forza contenuta, celebra l’incontro tra arte pubblica e pensiero.


Locarno – VCMLXXV – Public Installation by Paolo Grassi in Switzerland

Roman numerals rise from silence. A vertical sequence on a main road, between architecture and memory.

Installed along the road leading from Locarno’s old town toward the Maggia Valley, VCMLXXV is a wall-mounted sculpture by Paolo Grassi, created as part of the conceptual project From “0” to Infinity. Made of vertical metal elements forming the number 1975 in Roman numerals, the piece plays with perception, shadow, and memory.

 

Depending on the angle, it appears flat or spatial, static or floating. The work reflects on absence and presence, silence and continuity, in dialogue with the architecture and the rituals of time. Through abstraction and restraint, VCMLXXV invites the eye to slow down — to read not only the number but its silent resonance. A discreet monument to reflection, geometry, and poetic form.

Installata lungo la via che dalla città vecchia di Locarno conduce alla Valle Maggia, VCMLXXV è una scultura a parete di Paolo Grassi, parte del progetto concettuale From “0” to Infinity. Realizzata con elementi metallici verticali che formano il numero 1975 in numeri romani, l’opera gioca con la percezione, l’ombra e la memoria. A seconda dell’angolazione, appare piatta o tridimensionale, statica o sospesa.

 

L’intervento riflette su assenza e presenza, silenzio e continuità, in dialogo con l’architettura e i rituali del tempo. Attraverso misura e astrazione, VCMLXXV invita lo sguardo a rallentare, a leggere non solo il numero ma la sua risonanza silenziosa. Un monumento discreto alla riflessione, alla geometria e alla forma poetica.
