The City is a conceptual painting by Paolo Grassi, created in 2008 as part of the project From "0" to Infinity. The work explores the rhythm and structure of historical memory through a vertical sequence of painted years, from 1824 to 1851. Each number is meticulously hand-painted, never printed, and composed using a highly controlled geometric style. Yellow highlights subtly mark a recurring visual element, drawing the eye to a deeper system of relationships.

 

The composition evokes an abstract urban skyline: blocks of time rise and fall like buildings, expressing the rhythm of history and the layered accumulation of shared collective experience. The stark contrast between the white lines and deep black background enhances legibility and symbolic resonance.

 

Ideal for refined interiors, The City transforms the flow of time into visual architecture. It speaks of memory and order, absence and presence, offering a meditative space where numbers become both sign and silence.

The City è un dipinto concettuale di Paolo Grassi, realizzato nel 2008 per il progetto From "0" to Infinity. L’opera indaga il ritmo e la struttura della memoria storica attraverso una sequenza verticale di anni dipinti, dal 1824 al 1851. Ogni cifra è tracciata a mano con estrema precisione, mai stampata, e costruita con uno stile geometrico rigoroso. L’uso calibrato del giallo introduce un elemento visivo ricorrente che guida lo sguardo e svela un sistema più profondo di relazioni.

 

La composizione richiama idealmente lo skyline astratto di una città: blocchi temporali si innalzano e si abbassano come edifici, evocando il ritmo della storia e la stratificazione dell’esperienza collettiva. Il forte contrasto tra le linee bianche e il fondo nero amplifica la leggibilità e il valore simbolico.
