Melencolia – Bronze Sculpture Inspired by Dürer’s Polyhedron

Omaggio concettuale alla forma enigmatica di Dürer

“Melencolia” is a bronze sculpture created by Paolo Grassi in 2017 as a tribute to Albrecht Dürer and his renowned engraving Melencolia I (1514). The truncated polyhedron, a central element in Dürer’s image, is here reinterpreted through a conceptual language in which numbers become the essential structure of form and meaning.

On each facet of the sculpture, numbers from 5479 to 5490 are arranged as if they formed a visual code. Their layout appears fragmented and enigmatic, inviting the viewer to decipher a possible symbolic logic within an abstract mathematical frame.

The geometric volume remains faithful to the original enigma, but takes it further. It transforms into a metaphor for intellectual inquiry, philosophical uncertainty, and the tension between intuition and precision.

“Melencolia” is a unique work now held in a private collection. It is part of the ongoing project From “0” to Infinity, where each sculpture stands as a singular and unrepeatable element of a universal numerical narrative.

“Melencolia” è un’opera in bronzo realizzata da Paolo Grassi nel 2017 come omaggio ad Albrecht Dürer e alla sua celebre incisione Melencolia I del 1514. Il poliedro troncato, elemento centrale nell’immagine del maestro tedesco, viene qui reinterpretato attraverso un linguaggio concettuale contemporaneo che affida al numero il ruolo di struttura portante.

Sulle varie facce della scultura sono disposti i numeri dal 5479 al 5490. La loro sequenza, visivamente frammentata, si distribuisce come un codice cifrato da decifrare. Ogni lato rivela un frammento di significato, un’eco simbolica che richiama la tensione tra rigore matematico e inquietudine umana.

La forma geometrica resta fedele all’enigma originale, ma se ne distacca per aprire un discorso nuovo: il numero diventa metafora della ricerca, del dubbio, della costruzione del pensiero.

“Melencolia” è un’opera unica, oggi parte di una collezione privata, e appartiene al progetto From “0” to Infinity, in cui ogni scultura rappresenta un segmento irripetibile di un racconto numerico universale.
